CAMP HEALTH DIRECTOR / COUNSELOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing health and sanitation services at a children's day camp on a seasonal basis. The CAMP HEALTH DIRECTOR also directs and promotes appropriate recreational activities for all age groups. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the DAY CAMP DIRECTOR in charge of the program. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate staff. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Supervises health and sanitation at a children's day camp and facility;
  • Maintains youths confidential medical history;
    • Provides daily health surveillance of camp occupants; Handles health emergencies and injuries including emergency preparedness and provisions for professional health care;
  • Maintains camps daily medical log;
  • Reports required health & sanitation incidents to the Health Department within 24 hours;
    • Handles health emergencies and injuries, including emergency preparedness and provisions for professional health care;
    • Prepares records and reports as required;
    • Conducts, under the supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR the recreation programs and activities at a specific playground or play area;
    • Organizes, promotes and directs activities such as softball , badminton, paddle tennis, native studies, hikes, camping, arts and crafts, story-telling, dancing, singing, dramatics and quiet games;
    • Assists in the organization of and conducts tournaments in basketball, bowling, badminton, volleyball and table game leagues;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of health and sanitation codes; ability to administer first aid and CPR; ability to keep records and make reports. Good knowledge of the organization and conduct of recreation activities; ability to carry out goals and objectives put forth by the CAMP DIRECTOR; the ability to plan and direct the work of others; ability to maintain routine records; ability to stimulate and maintain the interest of program participants; ability to get along well with campers and staff, good observation, mental alertness, initiative, patience, emotional stability, sound judgment; integrity; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 18 years of age. Must be FIRST AID and CPR Certified. FIRST AID and CPR training are provided. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Current student in a Nursing training program, EMT training program, or comparable OR possession of a license or temporary permit to practice or current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, or other person acceptable to the permit-issuing official.

NOTE: It is required by NYS Department of Health that all prospective summer camp employees and volunteers are screened on the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry prior to their arrival at camp.

CAMP COUNSELOR / LIFEGUARD

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the leadership of youth activities. An employee in this class organizes, directs and promotes appropriate recreational activities for all age groups. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR in charge of the Program. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Serves as LIFEGUARD at waterfront.
    • Actively guards bathers during swimming activities
    • Responds to bathing facility emergencies
    • Supervise campers at poolside, beachfront, or in the water providing visual surveillance
    • Assists with buddy and/or board system
  • Conducts, under the supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR the recreation programs and activities at a specific playground or play area;
  • Assists with planning and implementing daily schedule of activities;
  • Inspects equipment for safety;
  • Maintains records of activities and inventory of equipment;
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Organizes, promotes and directs activities such as softball, badminton, paddle tennis, native studies, hikes, camping, arts and crafts, story-telling, dancing, singing, dramatics and quiet games;
  • Assists in the organization of and conducts tournaments in basketball, bowling, badminton, volleyball and table game leagues;

FULLPERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

A thorough knowledge of first aid, lifesaving, and rescue work as applied to accidents in the water; ability to swim well; ability to deal with the public and to secure cooperation without unnecessary antagonism; ability to keep records and to make simple reports and arithmetic computations. Good knowledge of the organization and conduct of recreation activities; ability to carry out goals and objectives put forth by the CAMP DIRECTOR; the ability to plan and direct the work of others; ability to maintain routine records; ability to stimulate and maintain the interest of program participants; ability to get along well with campers and staff, good observation, mental alertness, initiative, patience, emotional stability, sound judgment; integrity; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Must be 16-years-of-age. Must have experience in supervising children OR acceptable training. Must be certified in FIRST AID, CPR, and LIFEGUARD. FIRST AID and CPR training are provided. The Town of Keene will pay for LIFEGUARD training. The employee will need to provide a receipt to be reimbursed 1/2 up front. The other 1/2 will be reimbursed after the employee fulfills their summer commitment.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguarding training certificates from a certifying agency, acceptable to the State Health Commissioner.

NOTE: It is required by NYS Department of Health that all prospective summer camp employees and volunteers are screened on the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry prior to their arrival at camp.

LIFEGUARD / PART-TIME

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This part-time position supervises the late-afternoon swim activity of the summer youth program. The work involves responsibility for performing routine patrol work looking after the safety and welfare of the bathers at the designated swimming area. There is considerable responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Stands watch or patrols bathing beach or pool keeping bathers within bounds and going to their aid when  they are experiencing difficulty;
  • Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid;
  • Instructs beginners in swimming;
  • Keeps the beach or pool free of glass and other debris;
  • Performs other routine duties such as repairing equipment;
  • Maintains order and enforces compliance with beach or pool rules.

BUS DRIVER / CAMP COUNSELOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for transporting staff and campers of the summer program to various activities throughout the area via school bus. In addition, the COUNSELOR responsibilities involve directing and promoting appropriate recreational activities for all age groups. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR in charge of the Program. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Inspect bus when day begins, performing all standard safety checks.
  • Follow procedures to make sure they and all passengers are safe
  • Pick-up and drop-off campers at designated Bus Stops in the community.
  • Watch traffic and people carefully to ensure the safety of children getting on and off the bus
  • Keep order and safety on the bus
  • Conducts, under the supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR the recreation programs and activities at a specific playground or play area;
  • Assists with planning and implementing daily schedule of activities;
  • Inspects equipment for safety;
  • Maintains records of activities and inventory of equipment;
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Organizes, promotes and directs activities such as softball, badminton, paddle tennis, native studies, hikes, camping, arts and crafts, story-telling, dancing, singing, dramatics and quiet games;

Thorough knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; and mechanical aptitude. Good knowledge of the organization and conduct of recreation activities; ability to carry out goals and objectives put forth by the CAMP DIRECTOR; the ability to plan and direct the work of others; ability to maintain routine records; ability to stimulate and maintain the interest of program participants; ability to get along well with campers and staff, good observation, mental alertness, initiative, patience, emotional stability, sound judgment; integrity; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 21-years-of-age, and have a NYS Commercial Driver’s License with a School Bus (S) endorsement, at the time of appointment. Must have experience in supervising children OR acceptable training. Must be certified in FIRST AID and CPR (training will be provided if not certified).  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Current employment as a school bus driver.

PROGRESSIVE SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR / COUNSELOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for planning, organizing and supervising the safe, efficient, and economic operation of a swimming area. Work is performed under the

general direction of the responsible Board, Commission or Camp Director with wide leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision is exercised over the work of all subordinate staff. The incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Serves as LIFEGUARD at waterfront.
  • Teaches and assesses camper swimming ability.
  • Supervises and helps with the operation and maintenance of bath houses, toilets, picnic grounds, pool or beach, and all swimming area equipment;
  • Prepares various reports on the operation of the facility.
  • Conducts, under the supervision of the CAMP DIRECTOR the recreation programs and activities at a specific playground or play area;
  • Organizes, promotes and directs activities such as softball , badminton, paddle tennis, native studies, hikes, camping, arts and crafts, story-telling, dancing, singing, dramatics and quiet games;
  • Assists in the organization of and conducts tournaments in basketball, bowling, badminton, volleyball and table game leagues;

FIRST AID and CPR training is provided. FIRST AID and CPR training are provided. The Town of Keene will pay for WSI and LIFEGUARD training. The employee will need to provide a receipt to be reimbursed 1/2 up front. The other 1/2 will be reimbursed after the employee fulfills their summer commitment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of current American Red Cross Basic Life Support, CPR, Lifeguarding, and Waterfront Safety Instructor WSI) training certificates from a certifying agency, acceptable to the State Health Commissioner.

Skating Rink

2018 Hours of Operation:

Thursdays       - 3 PM to 6 PM

Fridays            - 3 PM to 9 PM

Saturdays        - 12 Noon to 9 PM

Sundays          - 12 Noon to 6 PM

 

Hot Cocoa Available for $0.25

Skates and Sleds are available on a first come first serves basis. Skate sizes vary.

When the skate room is closed, lights that are on a timer can be used at any time. The timer is located on the side of the building near the bathroom door. Lights on the sledding hill are motion detected.

Ski Program

Whiteface Mountain, Wilmington

The program runs 6 Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No bus transportation available to the mountain. Lessons are mandatory for each student. Rentals are available for an extra charge.  Steve Shambo is the Director of this program.

Sports Programs

We offer soccer, basketball and baseball teams each season that play in tournaments.

Summer Program

The summer program runs for 7 weeks in July and August from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many different trips and activities are offered throughout the summer like Echo Lake Aquarium in Burlington, Lake Placid Center for the Arts shows, Lake George Waterslide World, Swimming Lessons at the AuSable Club twice a week, Beach trips and so much more!

Trips

We offer various trips throughout the year to the movie theater, toboggan chute, corn maze, bowling alley, mall, minature golf and more! Stay tuned for our most current outings. Information is always posted at Keene Central School, on Channel 6 and our facebook page.
